On May 13, 2024 SAY GAY PLAYS (SGP) launched at the NYU Skirball Center in NYC. Performing for an audience of almost 500, we premiered 10 shorts plays by both established and up and coming queer playwrights, spanning a wide tapestry of identities and experiences. SAY GAY PLAYS launch served as a benefit for our partner organization, New Alternatives, and their work with homeless LGBTQ+ youth. In attendance, representing New Alternatives, was their founder, Kate Barnhart, who received a special shoutout for all the wonderful work she and the organization does for queer youth.

The night was filled with captivating stories and performances as well as some very special guests! We were honored to have the talented drag performer/actor, Peppermint, as our host, with a special appearance by drag performer Yua Hamasaki who spoke about New Alternatives mission. Additionally we were joined by comedian/performer(s), Murray Hill and Jeff Hiller, who presented the first ever SAY GAY PLAYS Award! Two of the 10 playwrights commissioned were selected from the Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival. Festival finalists, J. Harvey Stone and Derick Edgren Otero, were chosen to participate in this event and join the first ever catalog of SAY GAY playwrights.

With our kickoff event done SAY GAY is now in the process of rolling out SAY GAY PLAYS to theaters, universities, community groups, and more across the country. Be sure to check back for future updates on groups producing their own SGP events.
